Here is my selections.
1. Number 5 - General George Thomas - His actions at the Battle of Chickamauga, Battle of Chattanooga and Battle of Nashville showed his skill, leadership and abilities in command.
Number 4 - General William T. Sherman - His skill in holding the right flank at th Battle of Shiloh and the skills that he showed commanding the Army of Tennessee after Grant got promoted alone earned him this spot in my list. His march to the sea was the crowning campaign showing what future warfare was going to be like.
Number 3 - General George S. Patton - One of the best tactical generals the United States ever produced. His achievements during WW2 are legendary. His race across France following Operation Cobra and during the Battle of the Bulge stopping his army turning 90 degrees, traveling 100 miles, give or take, north and launching a three division attack into the southern flank of the Germans was absolutely brilliant.
Number 2 -General George Washington - His skill and abilities to defeat the British army which was better fed, armed and trained is enough to earn this spot. His great leadership in keeping the army together at Valley Forge made the Continental Army soldiers.
Number - 1- Ulysses S. Grant - Anybody that knows me this choice does not surprise them. Grant was the complete package. Strategy, having all armies working in unison to defeat all southern armies. Master of Logistics, from his service in the Mexican War taught him how to keep his men and army supplied. Tactical, adapting and overcoming on the battlefield. Battles of Shiloh and Chattanooga clearly show that ability. He had three Southern armies surrender to him, Fort Donelson, Vicksburg and Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox. His Vicksburg Campaign is still taught at Military Academies. The first true modern general in US history.
2. Number 5 - General Heinz Guderian - The founder of Blitzkreig, a master of mobil warfare.
Number 4 - Field Marshal Walter Model - One of the best defensive commanders. If he was not a general he would have been a fireman.
Number 3 - Field Marshal Erwin Rommel - The desert fox, won many victories in North Africa. If he would had gotten his way the Normandy Landings would have been bloodier. His major weakness was he had no time for logistics and was often away from his HQ and hard to contact because often led from the front.
Number 2 - Field Marshal Erich von Manstein - One of the best generals of WW2. Good strategist and tactical general. If he was allowed to make his own strategic choices in WW2 Russia would have suffered more losses.
Number 1 - General Hasso von Manteuffel - Simply the best overall general the German Army ever had. During the Battle of the Bulge his army almost broke thru and traveled farther west than any other German Army commited to the battle.
Bonus:
Number 5 - Vice Admiral Raizo Tanaka - His brilliance showed running the Tokyo Express to keep Japanese forces supplied and reinforced at Guadelcanal.
Number 4 - General Mitsuru Ushijima - His ability to make Okinawa a bloody battle of attrition. His well planned defence allowed Japanese Kamikazies to attack the US Navy and cause sever losses over three months time.
Number 3 - Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto - He was the Japanese best Admiral. He was a good strategist but he was not the best at the tactical level. At the tactical he made his operations to complicated and expected the enemy to do what he expected or wanted.
Number 2 - General Tadamichi Kuribayashi - Battle of Iwo Jima enough said. His defence of Island was top notch.
Number 1 - General Tomoyuki Yamashita - Best stategic and tactical general Japan produced during WW2. His Malaysian Campaign and capture/surrender of Singapore are great examples of his ability.
